ÖSTERLEN FARM
The 1850 Scanian farm in Österlen, southeast Sweden at the Baltic Sea, is surrounded by flatness and wide-open skies. The agricultural fields of cereal grains, sugar beets, and rapeseed frame this traditionally structured Gård. Richly layered against the forceful sea winds, the gardens are developing and will continue to be crafted.

The hedgerows, mature beeches and lindens, orchards, cloud-pruned hawthorn hedges “wrapping” perennial borders, lawns, meadows, stone cobble courtyards, and the hidden, hedged circular gardens or berså, a traditional wind-protected folly to escape for fika, creates the framework for the architecturally traditional guest and farmhouses and stables.
