SOPHIE KRAUSE
Design Associate
From an early age Sophie has been fascinated by the world of plants, pursuing anything she could to keep her hands in the dirt. She earned her degree in Environmental Science and Sustainable Urban Horticulture from the University of California Santa Cruz, and later a graduate degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington. Here, she managed the Green Futures Research + Design Lab, learning everything she could about plants, people, and how the two define place-making. She has traveled around the world working as a farmer and landscape designer - including coffee cooperatives in Nicaragua, a vocational prison farm in Chicago, Gehl Architects in Copenhagen, Château de Versailles and other historic landscapes throughout France. These experiences have reinforced the question, ‘How do we intentionally craft and care for gardens?’ Returning home as a Sonoma County native, Sophie has spent over a decade designing boutique landscapes around the Bay Area, rooted in botanical function and appreciation. Her work reflects a commitment and fascination with the many hands and living elements that construct our built world. Continuing this place-making within the greater MFLA team, she contributes a plant-focused and artful touch to our diverse array of projects. When not working to imagine and develop planted designs, she enjoys camping with her dog Loki, motorcycling with her partner Gus, and gardening at her cabin along the Russian River.
